EVOKERS

by L.A. Hyland

You call them dark gods

but to me they're a choir

singing something ancient

and beautiful, underpinning

everything; they weave

the worlds and the great

absent breaths

            between them.

When they fall silent

even light disappears.

You call them dark gods

  when you shiver

at shadows and odd shapes,

when your mind summons

monsters to dance,

when your heart thrums

with a sudden, unexpected

rhythm or you run

     without reason,

that's their wild noise

quaking and making

the universe gently;

you sense their vast song

and you know fear.
